GHCC Reunites AmeriCorps Members to Celebrate 37-Year Service Legacy

GHCC is adding a rich national service legacy to our list of things to celebrate during our 40th anniversary year.  On April 23-24, we will host a reunion for our current and former Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) members in the Station North Arts and Entertainment District.  Events will include a networking happy hour, a service project, and participation in the Station North Spring Music Festival.

VISTA is a national service program dedicated to eradicating poverty in the United States.  VISTA members sign on for a year of service with a host non-profit organization and receive a small stipend to facilitate their full-time volunteer work.

"Being a VISTA completely changed my life," said Leigh Dalton, who served as a VISTA with GHCC from July 2002 - July 2003.  "[I was] never involved in politics before my VISTA year.  When I moved to Baltimore I learned a lot and became very much involved in civic life."  Dalton has since gone on to oversee University of Baltimore's Truancy Court program.

GHCC aims to highlight just this sort of personal transformation during our weekend reunion celebration.  Many GHCC VISTA members have gone on to pursue successful careers driving by social change and promoting civic involvement - a path often inspired by their year of service.
