COACH Baltimore
Helping Baltimore City Public School students on the path to college!
GHCC is proud to continue the College Opportunity and Career Help (COACH) program in Baltimore in the 2009-2010 school year. COACH is a licensed and research-backed program of the Education Resource Institute in Boston. GHCC is the first organization licensed to bring COACH outside Massachusetts.
COACH was founded by two Harvard professors in 1999 to give public high school students in Boston the guidance they need as they apply to college and make decisions about life after high school. COACH provides college mentors who work with students all year long, helping them select colleges, write essays, and apply for financial aid. We are offering COACH to supplement the services offered by guidance counselors and existing college access providers for students who could benefit from additional attention.
Last year fifteen Johns Hopkins University volunteers worked with over 150 students in area high schools to increase college applications and acceptance rates. Results from our work at Baltimore City College, Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School, and Western High School will be available shortly. COACH volunteers helped students locate scholarships that amounted to $588,571 combined.
GHCC is continuing the COACH program this year with the help of seven dedicated Johns Hopkins University undergraduate volunteers and a partnership with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Social Concern. Our Fall 2009 program will occur at Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School and serve 35 High School seniors. Volunteers undergo a rigorous application and training process to ensure the best service to students.
