Adult Literacy Program
Classes and Registration
Adult Basic Education Classes
Professional teachers lead Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes in reading, writing, and math. Beginning July 2010, classes meet 3 hours a day, two days a week. Class cycles generally run from July to early September ( summer, 6–8 weeks); late September to mid-December (fall, 12 weeks); January to March (winter, 10 weeks); and April to early June (spring, 10 weeks).
Most classes are held at the Program’s offices at 3501 N. Charles Street, in the lower level of the University Baptist Church; directions can be found here. We also have satellite partnerships with Marian House in Better Waverly, the Hampden Family Center in Hampden, and the Franciscan Center (registration flyer can be found here) near Maryland Avenue & 23rd Street. Our Govans satellite annex is at 5710 Bellona Avenue, next to the Enoch Pratt Free Library Govans branch (ABE registration form is here).
Reading and math groups are 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.–9 p.m., two days per week (Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday). Some groups study both reading and math, while others are targeted in one area or the other.
You can reach the program staff at (410) 261-3524 for more information, and our current flyer can be downloaded here.
