VISTA Program

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) members provide one year of full-time service to over 1,200 non-profit, faith-based, and other community organizations and public agencies throughout the country in an effort to alleviate poverty in the communities they serve.

Improving Neighborhoods

Community Organizer (Barclay, Midway, Old Goucher)-This position has been filled

Empowering neighborhoods and supporting people! The VISTA member will help redevelop a historic neighborhood in central Baltimore. He/she will work with residents and community builders to help create a positive neighborhood environment and connect residents with needed services and information. To apply, click here.

Central Baltimore Community Organizer-This position has been filled

Comprised of some of Baltimore's most historic neighborhoods as well as one of its most vibrant arts and entertainment communities, Central Baltimore is at the center of a resurgent city that serves asa gateway for millions of people who enter Baltimore by rail or via the Jones Falls Expressway. The Central Baltimore Partnership (CBP) is an innovative new approach to community development that is recognized as being at the forefront of city renewal. The CBP VISTA position provides a great opportunity to support this wave of change and revitalization. The Central Baltimore VISTA would work within its various Central Baltimore neighborhoods to mobilize the community, local businesses and artists, and partner organizations. The VISTA will respond dynamically to community needs, creating capacity and connecting communities to neighborhood revitalization resources. To apply, click here.

 

Community Organizer (York Road Partnership)-This position has been filled

Help build an organization that can advocate for revitalization along this important commercial and residential corridor! The VISTA member will work with community leaders and local organizations and institutions to create a new strategic plan for this area of north Baltimore. Work will include convening public meetings, grantwriting and bringing together people from diverse neighborhoods to work together to build a more successful community. To apply, click here.


Adult Literacy and English as a Second Language

Literacy Transitions Service Learning-This position has been filled

Simply put, people need jobs. And to get jobs they need skills, developed through education and/or training options. The VISTA member will work closely with GHCC's Adult literacy Program to implement service learning programs to help build participants' independence and marketable skills. To apply, click here.

 

Public Schools

COACH/Transitions Coordinator-This position has been filled

Change the paradigm by assisting in building a support network for students' transition from middle school to high school and finally college. The VISTA member will build an intergenerational mentorship program to support middle school students in preparation for high school. They will then support motivated college students to help prepare high school students for college via the COACH program. To apply, click here.

School Liaison, Barclay and Margaret Brent  (two separate positions)-These positions have been filled

Motivate parents to become resources in their children's school! The VISTA member will have the opportunity to engage parents to become more involved with their children's learning and participate in school decision making. The result will be an increased relationship between the, neighborhood, businesses, and faith partners-all focused on school improvements that serve all kids. Success Academy-This position has been filled

Help open doors for youth in North Baltimore! The VISTA member will work at an alternative school for students on long-term suspension. The work will include bringing together a team of individuals dedicated to finding supportive resources, internships and services that help youth stay out of trouble and achieve their dreams. The result will be a network that supports students in need of a second chance in every aspect of their lives. To apply, click here.

Get people involved in their local school! The VISTA member will reach out to parents, teachers, individuals and organizations in the community to get them involved in school improvement and building support for teachers and parents. To apply, click here.
