FAQ's for Potential GHCC AmeriCorps* VISTA Members

How do I apply for a position?
Go to our VISTA Program Page for information on how to apply. Someone will be in touch with you shortly after you submit your online application.

I'm confused. There are different programs, with different names, but they're all AmeriCorps?
Yes, basically. AmeriCorps is a national network of hundreds of programs throughout the US. There are two programs that are managed nationally: AmeriCorps VISTA and AmeriCorps NCCC. The other programs come under the general heading of AmeriCorps, and they are found in local and national organizations throughout the US. All of GHCC's positions are VISTA AmeriCorps*.

Is AmeriCorps like Peace Corps?
Yes. Both agencies are committed to service, and both offer challenging and rewarding full-time opportunities. Peace Corps assignments are all overseas, and AmeriCorps members serve only in the US. While Peace Corps Volunteers serve for two years, a stint in AmeriCorps usually lasts 10 months to one year. GHCC positions are for one year.

Do I get paid?
For all AmeriCorps programs, members receive a modest living allowance, and some programs provide housing. Members are allowed to apply for assistance from social services, which if all requirements are met, can be up to $200 a month. You may not save much money during your year of service, but most members find the living allowance to be adequate to cover their needs. AmeriCorps members who complete a term of service also receive an AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,530.

What if I'm out of school and not interested in the education award? Can I get that money in cash?
Yes, you may opt for a cash payment of around $100 per month ($1,500) of service instead of the education award. All other AmeriCorps members are eligible only for the education award ($5,350). Adults over 55 may pass their award onto grandchildren and foster children.

How long are the assignments, and are they all full-time?
Projects are for one calendar year. When you sign on to becoming a VISTA you sign up to be on call 24/7. Most sites stick to the typical work day model of an eight hour work shift.

Can I join if I'm not a U.S. citizen?
You must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the U.S. to be an AmeriCorps member.

Is there an age requirement?
GHCC requires all candidates to be at least 18 years old. GHCC requires college or several years of work experience.

What skills do I need to have?
We are seeking candidates who are well organized, highly motivated, with strong verbal and written communication, networking skills, be comfortable to work with people of diverse background, leadership abilities and competent computer and technology skills; must be able to navigate Microsoft Office, any internet browser and social networking sites. Other desirable characteristics community organizing skills and the ability to develop community leadership skills.

Can I defer student loans during my service with AmeriCorps?
You may qualify for postponement, or forbearance, of the repayment of your loans during your service. The education award will help you pay off qualified student loans when you're finished. Contact your lender for more specific information or to confirm your loan status during AmeriCorps service.

Are there any loan forgiveness programs or repayment plans that I might qualify for as an AmeriCorps member?
On September 27, 2007, President Bush signed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 ("CCRAA") into law. In addition to other amendments to the Higher Education Act of 1965, the CCRAA created two new federal programs: a new Public Service Loan Forgiveness program and a new Income-Based Repayment plan (IBR) for the repayment of federal loans. The new Income-Based Repayment plan helps to make repaying education loans more affordable for low-income borrowers, such as an AmeriCorps member living on a stipend; AmeriCorps service is also recognized as equivalent to a public service job for the purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

Will I get any training before I start?
Absolutely. All members receive training from the Corporation of National and Community Service of their service, as well as project-specific training during service. GHCC is devoted to running an on-site-orientation as well as offering many opportunities of professional development throughout the year.
